Creating a low impedance ground path between the motor and VFD is essential to reducing potential(voltage) differences, and thus harmful common mode currents. When the variable frequency drive cable provides the lowest impedance ground path, it will mitigate common mode current flowing into other devices/systems. Having a suitable ground means it is possible to control where the potentially harmful energy from the variable frequency drive goes.
Optimal contact, through close tolerances, between the core and the motor frame, improves the heat dissipation process. The heat in the copper conductor goes into the iron core and is then transferred to the frame of the motor, which has cooling ribs. This provides a bigger heat dissipation surface.
Energy efficient motors use materials with higher grades, which results in these motors being more expensive than general electric motors, says Chryssoulis. The average cost of energy efficient motors is 15% higher than other electric motors, he adds.

Eskom's programme has faced a number of challenges in terms of buy-in response, says Chryssoulis. Customers wanting to benefit from the rebate have to return the old motor that is being replaced, and provide ***umentation to the supplier of the new energy efficient motor. |
